BUILD A BATHTUB WORM FARM - WITH ‘BRIAN THE WORM MAN’

11:00AM - 12:30PM SUNDAY 20TH aUGUST 2023

Ever thought about starting your own worm farm, have tried in the past but not been successful, or maybe you’re just looking for a new DIY project? This workshop, in collaboration with Brian Donaldson aka ‘Brian the worm man’, will introduce you to the world of worm farming and how these amazing little creatures can easily become your new favourite pets. Brian is a commercial worm farmer with extraordinary knowledge about the topic; and he will ignite the passion for worms that you never realised you had.

At Jane Street, we understand that compost bins are not a viable option for many people living in the inner-city. With the sad reality then being that much more food scraps ends up in the landfill bin. We believe that worm farms (do not have to be as large as a bathtub) are an amazing option for those living in apartments or higher density living. A thriving worm farm will break down your household food scraps, greatly reducing your contribution to landfill and climate change. The fear that they will smell or bring pests is also incorrect (when done correctly). And as a reward for your efforts to help the planet, worms are kind enough to gift you with castings and liquid fertiliser for your plants!

This workshop is aimed at introductory - intermediate levels, so even if you have no knowledge at all about worms or worm farming, you are most welcome to participate. We will both educate you on the amazing benefits of worm farming, but also show you how you can easily start your own worm farm at home, using everyday, non-expensive materials. Together, you will build two worm farms out of old bathtubs at the garden. This will be a hands-on experience, where you can understand the components and processes that go into a successful worm farm; inspiring you to create your own one at home.

Gloves will be provided and water is available on site. Please note, there is no bathroom at Jane Street Community Garden.
